Speaker: Nikita Kulkarni, PA-S
Course Description:
Acral Lentiginous Melanoma (ALM) is an aggressive melanoma subtype that disproportionately affects individuals with skin of color. Due to its subtle presentation on the palms, soles, and nail beds, as well as systemic healthcare disparities, ALM is often diagnosed at later stages, leading to poorer outcomes. This session will explore the clinical presentation of ALM, the challenges contributing to delayed diagnosis, and the impact of healthcare inequities on patient outcomes. Attendees will also learn practical strategies to improve early detection and enhance the delivery of equitable care. These strategies include the use of diagnostic tools like the "CUBED" criteria, increased provider education, and patient outreach initiatives.
Session Objectives:
- Highlight the Key Characteristics of Acral Lentiginous Melanoma (ALM): Provide an overview of ALM, including its etiologies, risk factors, unique presentation, and prevalence among patients with skin of color.
- Outline Common Diagnostic Challenges in Skin of Color: Describe the factors contributing to diagnostic delays in ALM for patients with darker skin tones.
- Address Systemic and Health Inequity Barriers: Examine systemic factors contributing to ALM disparities in care, including access to dermatology specialists, insurance coverage, socioeconomic status, and implicit biases in medical education.
- Outline Strategies to Address ALM Health Disparities: Propose initiatives to enhance equitable care, such as increasing diversity in dermatologic research, expanding outreach, and improving access to dermatologic services. Suggest methods to raise awareness among healthcare providers and patients, including the use of "CUBED" criteria for ALM and other diagnostic aids.
