ADVOCACY
Federal Action Threatens PA Student Loan Access
A critical development threatens the financial viability of PA education and could significantly impact the future PA workforce in Iowa and across the nation.
The Iowa Physician Assistant Society (IPAS) champions legislation that promotes the health and well-being of patients, enhances access to equitable healthcare, fosters a practice environment that upholds the highest standards of patient-centered care, and empowers PAs to fully utilize their training and expertise in meeting Iowa's evolving healthcare needs.
IPAS works with legislators and policy makers locally and nationally to provide legislative advocacy on issues important to the PA profession. Through its members and friends, IPAS is constantly working to increase access to medical care and to improve the team approach to healthcare.
Legislative Priorities
- Professional Title Modernization
Update the PA title from
Physician Assistant to
Physician Associate in Iowa statute. This change accurately reflects the advanced medical training, autonomy, and responsibilities PAs carry in modern healthcare teams. It strengthens patient understanding, reduces confusion, and aligns Iowa with national standards.
- Policies that Support Optimal Team Practice (OTP)
Foster seamless collaboration among PAs, physicians, and other healthcare professionals to deliver high-quality, patient-centered care free from unnecessary administrative barriers.
- Licensing Practices that Streamline the Process
Advocate for licensing policies that attract and retain a robust PA workforce, enhance patient access and continuity of care, and reduce administrative burdens.
PA Legislative Day
Each year, the Iowa Physician Assistant Society holds a reception in the State Capitol Rotunda.
This is an opportunity for members to reach out to legislators in person and discuss issues and legislation that impact the PA profession.
