Title Change

ADVOCACY AT WORK

In the 2026 Iowa Legislative Session, IPAS successfully advanced legislation to modernize the professional title of Physician Assistants. Senate File 2190 was signed into law by Governor Kim Reynolds and updates Iowa statute to change the PA title from Physician Assistant to Physician Associate, effective July 1, 2026.

This title change more accurately reflects the advanced medical education, clinical training, autonomy, and responsibilities of PAs within today’s healthcare teams. It also improves patient understanding, reduces confusion, and aligns Iowa with national standards and terminology used across the profession.

This bipartisan achievement was made possible through the strong advocacy and engagement of Iowa PAs and the leadership of IPAS legislative champions.
