PA Rules Changes

Effective April 4, 2007 PAs will be required to notify the PA Board of supervising physician changes every two years when the PAs renew their licenses instead of within 90 days of the change. PAs will still be required to maintain a list of supervising physicians available to the PA Board on request.  Also, PAs will be allowed to learn new tasks with indirect as well as direct supervision, permitting training via new technologies such as telemedicine and the Internet. Other changes allow new PA graduates to obtain a temporary license sooner by submitting a certificate of completion from their educational program if the transcript of credits is not available. And the new rules clarify that supervision is the responsibility of both the PA and the supervising physician.

Thank you for your help in achieving these successes. Please stay tuned for action on issues.

Hi Folks,

Good news!  It came down to the wire, but SF 248, a bill to add 2 PAs to the PA Examining Board, passed in the Iowa Legislature on 4-28-07 as an amendment to HF 909, the Health and Human Services Appropriations bill.  Governor Culver signed this bill into law on May 29, 2007.

Thank you to all of you who helped make this success happen. Please take a few minutes to thank State Senator Amanda Ragan for her key role in passing this PA bill. Likewise, thank your state senator and representative for their support.

Medicare Law Help Needed!

We need your help to convince Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) that the Medicare law needs to be revised to allow PAs to order home health, hospice, and skilled nursing facility care, as well as to provide hospice care for Medicare patients. Senator Grassley is Chairman of the Senate Committee on Finance, and his support is key to obtaining the needed Medicare changes.

Senator Grassley needs to hear from PAs who are his constituents. We need to tell him how the Medicare limitations negatively affect patient care and PAs' ability to provide quality health care to Medicare beneficiaries in the state. tories and examples of how the limitations delay or restrict access to needed health care are powerful and should be included.

Please send an email message to Senator Grassley  to ask his support to amend Medicare to allow PAs to order home health, hospice, and skilled nursing facility care and to provide the hospice benefit.

It's easy and will only take a few minutes of your time. Go to the AAPA Legislative Action Center on AAPA's website. Once you've signed in, you'll be directed to the "Federal Center." Click on "Take action on: Medicare." Next, click on "Send a Message." Personalize your message by adding information about where you practice and why the Medicare changes are needed to improve your ability to provide quality patient care.
